Who Was The First Blogger To Launch The First Blog Ever?
Blogging has over the past couple of years transformed from a simple part time hobby to a lucrative part time “hobby” with monetary rewards attached to it (this list of some of the highest earning blogs just goes to show how rewarding it can be) and today I thought it would be a good idea to look at who was the first blogger or father of blogging if you like as well as which was the first blog ever to grace the World Wide Web.
In trying to trace who was the very first blogger to launch the first blog ever, I came across a rather lengthy but interesting article on CNET’s news blog dated March 20th 2007 (4:00 AM PDT) and which was titled “Blogs turn 10–who’s the father?”
I then proceeded to try and “mine” from the article details concerning who was the very first blogger to come up with the first blog ever and below is pretty much what I came up with.
Who Was The First Blogger To Launch The First Blog Ever?
What I gathered from CNET’s article on who was the very first blogger and owner of the first blog ever is that there are basically three people who are claimed to have launched the first blog ever and these are:
Dave Winer
Jorn Barger
Justin Hall
In order to see who among the three is truly the very first blogger and founder of the first blog ever, let’s take a brief peek into their individual profiles.
Who Was The First Blogger To Launch The First Blog Ever? This Is What Their Profiles Say
Dave Winer
He is a pioneer of Web syndication techniques and editor of Scripting News which was launched on 1st April 1997.
He is remembered as having quoted in his site that Scripting News “bootstrapped the blogging revolution” and that it is the “longest currently running Web log on the Internet” (i.e. the first blog ever) but the funny thing is that after a while of playing “cat and mouse” with CNET NEWS, the “first blogger” admitted to not having invented the term “Web log” and he issued a statement saying “the first blogs were inspired” by Scripting News.
Jorn Barger
He is a programmer who in addition to coining the term “Web log”, created RobotWisdom.com in December 1997 to feature collections of links to articles about politics, culture, books and technology that he found interesting.
Below is what the “first blogger” who came up with the “first blog ever” said in an e-mail interview with CNET NEWS:
“Since I made up the word, I assume I get to define it and by my strictest definition Winer wasn’t quite a blog–he mixed up the reverse-chronological ordering too much. So–unsurprisingly–the first 100 percent Weblog would be mine.”
Barger said his site was a daily updated log of his reading and intellectual pursuits and because it was online, he decided to called it a “Web log” thought it would later be abbreviated and de-capitalized to “blog” by Peter Merholz of Peterme.com.
Justin Hall
He is a Web diarist and online gaming expert whom The New York Times Magazine recognized as the “founding father of personal blogging” so he might as well be the “first blogger” to launch the “first blog ever”.
In the end, I think it’s safe to say that all these men played a part in coming up with the first blog ever hence they are all founding fathers of blogging.
Last Word On Who Was The First Blogger To Launch The First Blog Ever
Although it’s a bit hazy to say who was the first blogger and owner of the first blog ever, I believe it’s safe to say that the first blog ever was launched in 1997 but this is contingent on CNET’s 2007 article that was titled “Blogs turn 10–who’s the father?”
As always, feel free to share what your thoughts are on which was the first blog ever; I’d definitely love to hear from you!
