Two Men And A Truck Brief History

Two Men And A Truck first begun over 20 years ago as an after school activity for Brig and Jon Sorber, two brothers who were looking for a way to make some extra money on the side while still in high school.

Brig Sorber and his brother Jon Sorber began their “pocket money” business by helping people in the Lansing area move their belonging using their mother’s old pick-up truck. Their mother, Mary Ellen Sheets, helped to develop for her sons a business logo which was put in a weekly community newspaper.

When the two brothers left for college, Mary continued to receive calls for her sons moving services and despite working in a full time data processing job with the state of Michigan, Mary decided to take the next step for the business and in 1985, she purchased a 14-foot truck for $350, the only capital she has ever invested in TWO MEN AND A TRUCK till date. She also hired a pair of movers.

In 1988 Mary earned a spot in a graduate business panel at Michigan State University as a result of her experience with data analysis combined with her customer service commitment. It was in this panel that Mary received an idea to franchise her little Two Men And A Truck business from one of the other panelists.

After consulting with an attorney on the matter of franchising her Two Men And A Truck business, Mary awarded the first franchise to her daughter Melanie Bergeron in 1989 in an office that was located in Atlanta, Ga.

When Two Men And A Truck totaled 39 franchises, Mary asked her daughter Bergeron to assume the role of company president while she pursued a seat in the Michigan State Senate. Bergeron is currently the chair of the board.

In the mid-1990s, Brig and Jon returned from school and teamed up with their mom and older sister to expand on their Two Men And A Truck business. Brig Sorber currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer and Jon Sorber is the Executive Vice President.

In August 2012, former Chief Operating Officer Randy Shacka was promoted to president of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK. Randy joined TWO MEN AND A TRUCK in 2001 as an intern and has since then held several roles including; Franchise Development Specialist, Director of Operations, Chief Development Officer (CDO) and Chief Operating Officer (COO). This marks the first time in the history of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK that the title of President has been held by a person outside of the Sorber family.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK currently offer local and long distance moving services in about 200 locations across 34 states in the United States.
