Robert Kiyosaki’s Life History

Robert Kiyosaki was born and raised in Hilo, Hawaii. Despite not much being said about Robert Kiyosaki’s mother, his father, Ralph H. Kiyosaki (1919-1991) who is depicted as the Poor Dad in his bestselling book, Rich Dad Poor Dad, was an educator. Kiyosaki has one brother and two sisters.

When Kiyosaki graduated from Hilo High School, he proceeded on to join the U.S Merchant Marine Academy, New York, where he graduated in the class of 1969 as a deck officer. Robert Kiyosaki later on served in the Marine Corps as a helicopter gunship pilot during the Vietnam War in 1972 and due to his prowess; he was awarded the Air Medal.

In 1975, Robert Kiyosaki left the Marine Corps and joined the Xerox Corporation where he worked as a copy machine salesman until he started his own company that specialized in selling nylon and Velcro “surfer” wallets, the first of its kind in the US market. Kiyosaki’s wallet company eventually became bankrupt soon after enjoying success.

In the early 1980’s, Robert Kiyosaki once again started a T-Shirt licensing company that licensed T-Shirts for Heavy Metal Rock bands but he ended up selling it in 1985.

Despite Kiyosaki filing for bankruptcy in August 20,2012 in a Wyoming Bankruptcy Court when one of his companies, Rich Global LLC was ordered by a U.S District Court to pay Learning Annex and its chairman Bill Zanker $23,687,957.21

(roughly $24M) for profits from events they helped set up for Robert Kiyosaki, this was not the first time that the bestselling author has been related with the term “bankrupt” so to say.

In his book,You Can Choose To Be Rich,Robert Kiyosaki says that after his bankruptcy, he became homeless and lived with Kim who was his girlfriend then, in the back of an old Toyota for a couple of months before the duo started their own business from scratch.

In 1985, Robert Kiyosaki married Kim who is also an entrepreneur, motivational speaker, author and investor. Since 1994, Kim Kiyosaki and Robert Kiyosaki have lived in Scottsdale area in Phoenix, Arizona.

After Robert Kiyosaki ‘s short lived retirement of three years, he launched Cashflow Technologies Inc. in 1997 that is the parent company of Rich Dad and the Cashflow brands.

Robert Kiyosaki is what you’d call an open minded investor due to his broad investments in different sectors of the economy and below are just a few of them.

Games            

Robert Kiyosaki has over time come up with several board games such as the Cashflow 101 and Cashflow 202 which are similar to Monopoly. They are aimed at teaching various investment concepts, the most important being letting your money work for you.

Mining ventures

In 2002, Robert Kiyosaki took ownership of a South American silver mine and took public a Chinese gold mining company. He also took public additional mines from IPOs listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange during the early 2000s.

Real Estate

Robert Kiyosaki is an active real estate investor and as a result, a large portion of his wealth is real estate related. He has various real estate investments, real estate development ventures and property management ventures operating around the US. A good number of his holdings include hotels, golf courses and large apartment complexes. Kiyosaki has also been involved in the commercial real estate sector e.g. investing in warehouses, Triple net lease and real estate development ventures around the USA.

Oil Wells And Natural Gas Investments

Robert Kiyosaki has himself stated in several occasions that he owns oil drilling operations and wells around the United States.

Solar Company

In 2010, Robert Kiyosaki said in one of his Rich Dad videos that he had invested in a certain solar startup company.

Financial Market Investments

In his bestselling book, Rich Dad Poor Dad, Robert Kiyosaki mentioned he was attaining a consistent 16% ROI through tax lien certificates. He also said in his book that he had been investing in several governments tax free bonds which paid over 12% tax free dividend interest upon maturity.

Kiyosaki is also an active investor in the commodity market where he has invested in precious stones and metals like gold and silver. In his 2008 book, Rich Dads Increase Your Financial IQ, he said his main reason of investing in these precious stones was to shelter himself against various economic meltdowns like inflation.

Robert Kiyosaki’s main philosophy is achieving financial freedom by generating passive income via investments such as real estate and other forms of business investments that do not require one to work for a paycheck.

He’s also passionate about teaching others what he refers to as “Financial Education” so as to also open their eyes to the world of investment opportunities.
