Enjoy!

NB: The above are just SOME of the most popular search engines.

Now that you’ve seen which the most popular search engines are, I believe it’s time that I informed you how I came up with the above list (This section is intended to show you that I didn’t cook up anything)

Steps On How I Came Up With The Above 25 Most Popular Search Engines On The Internet

  1. I consulted my good friend Google a.k.a the King of the web, who then showed me a couple of sites detailing which are the most popular search engines on the internet.
  2. I headed over to Alexa where I searched for the Alexa Rank plus the number of Backlinks (i.e. sites linking in) for the most popular search engines list that I had compiled from the above step.
  3. I used both Wikipedia and Google to get the dates as to when the above search engines were created.
  4. I then came up with a table detailing which were the most popular search engines together with their respective Alexa Rank’s, Backlinks and year of creation.

We’ll now go ahead and look at the market share for the most popular search engines.

Search Engine Market Share For The Most Popular Search Engines

#

Search Engine

Market Share (%)

1 Google 80.10
2 Bing 9.58
3 Yahoo! 7.13
4 AOL 1.78
5 Ask 1.41
6 Other 0.00

How I Came Up With The Above Search Engine Market Share

I used Stat Owl  to come up with the above market share statistic for the most popular search engines but I have to say I necessarily don’t agree with the underlined market share of the “Other” search engines which they listed as 0.00%. Statistically speaking, I think the “Other” search engines should at least have a 1% market share.

In this respect, I decided to come up with an “adjusted” statistic of the above search engine market share.

How I Came Up With The Adjusted Search Engine Market Share For The Most Popular Search Engines

  1. I hypothesized that the “Other” search engines needed to have at least 1% market share
  2. I got the 1% of each of the other search engines
  3. I deducted the 1% I got above from the respective search engine
  4. I then added 1% to the “Other” search engines

For the mathematical guys, here’s what I mean:

1% x 80.10%=0.00801

1% x 9.58=0.000958

1% x 7.13=0.000713

1% x 1.78=0.000178

1% x 1.41=0.000141

You will notice that the respective results adds up to 1% i.e. 0.00801+0.000958+0.000713+0.000178+0.000141=0.01 (1%)

I then deducted the above values from their respective percentages i.e.

80.10%-0.801%=79.299%

9.58%-0.0958%=9.4842%

7.13%-0.0713%=7.0587%

1.78%-0.0178%=1.7622%

1.41%-0.0141%=1.3959%

Then I had the data I wanted to come up with the below table of the adjusted search engine market share for the most popular search engines.

3
