Jeremy Yaffe Early & Family Life
Jeremy Yaffe was born in 1937 in Massachusetts, United States. Her father was George Yaffe and her mother was Ninna Yaffe.
She was a freshman at Bennington college, the same college where her future husband, Arkin was already a senior.
According to Arkin’s biography, he married Jeremy when she was just 18 years old and he was 21.
At the time she was a music and dance student.
They eventually left college together and headed to New York to start a new life as a couple.
After a couple of weeks in NY, the couple found out that Jeremy was pregnant and in his book An Improvised Life, Arkin says:
Floundering in New York with a pregnant wife to care for, I tried looking for acting work to no avail. I wanted desperately to be responsible.
He even tried to get a “real job” but couldn’t get one.
Jeremy Yaffe gave birth to their firstborn son Adam Arkin on 19th August 1956.
Their second son Matthew Arkin was born on 21st March 1960.
It was a couple of months after the birth of their second son Matthew that the financial strain of raising a family become too much for her to handle and as such, she took her sons and left.
Their marriage ended in divorce in 1961 due to financial problems.
Alan in his book narrates:
“Finally, the insecurity of our life became too much for Jeremy, within months of the birth of our second son, Matthew, she took the children and left”
Though he was left lonely and heartbroken, he picked himself up and made a personal commitment to improving his financial situation so as to be able to support his family.
He took a performing job in Chicago at a place called Second City where it took him about 6 months to pay off all his debt.
This marked the beginning of his rise to stardom.

Jeremy Yaffe was part of a music group called “The Baby Sitters” together with her ex-husband.
They recorded four albums of children’s folk songs from 1958 until 1968.
According to Jeremy Yaffe Wikipedia, its original members were ex-Weaver Lee Hays as composer, Doris Willens Kaplan as lyricist, Alan Arkin as guitarist and his wife Jeremy Yaffe Arkin.
Jeremy was however replaced in 1964 by Barbara Dana who would later on become Arkin’s second wife.
Their firstborn son, Adam Arkin, got featured in a couple of songs.
