She on the other hand didn’t understand why he didn’t want to talk about what had just happened or even to grieve the loss of their first child.

But Nevada Alexander Musk death would later send her on a year-long inward spiral of depression and distraction that would have been longer if one of the couple’s nannies had noticed her struggling.

Her nanny approached her and gave her the name and details of an excellent therapist.

Justine decided to give therapy a shot and it was during her weekly sessions that she began to get perspective on what had become of her life.

Elon Musk Opens Up About His Son’s Death

“My firstborn son died in my arms. I felt his last heartbeat” – Elon Musk

Those were the words that Elon shared with James Riley via email correspondence in 2018 after James lost his son Barrett in an accident involving a Tesla.

Barrett was driving a Tesla Model S on May 8, 2018, when he lost control at 116 miles per hour and crashed into a concrete wall of a house in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The Model S was engulfed in flames claiming the lives of Barrett Riley and his friend who was sitting in the passenger seat.

Elon and Justine divorced in 2008, 8 years after being married.

She recounts how she felt like a trophy wife with not much say in the marriage.

Elon was obsessed with his work so much so that when he was home, his mind was still elsewhere.

Though she longed for deep and heartfelt conversations, for intimacy and empathy, she was met by the harsh reality of a busy rich husband.

They had tried to go for counselling but after one month and three sessions later, Elon gave his wife an ultimatum:

Either we fix this marriage today or I will divorce you tomorrow.

According to Justine Musk, her husband implied that the status quo worked for him and so he figured it should have worked for her as well.

Elon Musk filed for divorce the next morning and this left her feeling numb but strangely relieved.
